South Sumatra is one of the Indonesian province located in the southern part of Sumatra Island. This provincial capital in Palembang. Geographically, South Sumatra province bordering the province of Jambi to the north, the province of Bangka-Belitung Islands in the eastern province of Lampung in the south, and west of Bengkulu province. This province is rich in natural resources, such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Besides the provincial capital of South Sumatra, Palembang, has been famous since the first since he became the capital of the Kingdom of Sriwijaya.

In addition, this province has many attractive tourist destination to visit, such as the Musi River, the bridge shall, Kemaro Island, Lake Ranau, Kota Pagaralam, etc.. Because since the former has become a center of trade, indirectly influence the culture of the society. Food typical of this province are as varied as Pempek, model, tekwan, boiled catfish, boiled bones, chili jokjok, berengkes, and tempoyak.

South Sumatra province since centuries ago, also known as Earth Sriwijaya; in the 7th century to 12th century AD this area was the center of Srivijaya kingdom which is also famous for the largest and most powerful maritime kingdom in the archipelago. Echoes and its influence even to Madagascar in the African Continent.
Since the 13th century until the 14th century, the area under the power of Majapahit. Furthermore, this region had become no man's land and pirates from International bersarangnya especially from China.
In the early 15th century the Sultanate of Palembang's ruling stood until the advent of Western colonialism, and then followed by Japan. When I was victorious, Sriwijaya Palembang as the City also makes the Kingdom.
According to inscriptions found Kedukan Hill mentions in 1926, the settlement called Srivijaya was founded on June 17, 683 AD. This date was later to become the city of Palembang day which is celebrated every year.

History of South Sumatra Riau related to the history and the history of the kingdoms of the Peninsula Land of the Malays. It is quite logical when connected with the development of the nation Deutro-Malays in this region. Descendants Deutro-Malays have been inhabiting the region since the year 300 BC. They shift the position of the nation Proto-Malays who came there about 2000 years earlier.
Because of its strategic location for the world cruises, coupled with abundant natural wealth, South Sumatra visited by many foreign merchants, mainly from Saudi Arabia, India and China, since early in the year AD. So no surprise if the fastest growing communities of South Sumatra and later gave birth to an empire called Srivijaya.
Historians agree that the kingdom of Sriwijaya grow, develop and experienced its heyday during the centuries between the seventh century until the 12th century. Sriwijaya produce their own important commodity in those days, such as pepper and tin. Areas that generate a lot of pepper is an area along the River Kampar, Kuantan, Singingi (Riau) and Batanghari (Jambi). Tin was imported from areas Kedah (Malaysia) and Tapung Petapahan in Siak River (Riau). In addition Sriwijaya also sell gold from Kuantan River and Singingi.

These items attract traders from East and West are competing for trade with Sriwijaya. Sriwijaya no doubt that greatness again, it was logical because it's quite a lot of historical facts that support it. But the problem is not the case with the kingdom's central location. Historians are still debating this issue.
A number of historians argue that it is the center of the kingdom of Palembang, where the inscriptions found many relics of Sriwijaya. Others put it in the Bay of Bandon (now Thailand region), in Java, in Perak, in Jambi, and in Muaratakus (Riau). This is based on the reconstruction of maps showing place names mentioned in various foreign sources, and records of the merchant kings of travel time, in addition to various folk tales about the king of Sriwijaya. However, each version may each have the truth. Because as a maritime country with rich and dynamic as Sriwijaya, moving the capital in the span of more than five centuries is not something impossible.
Sriwijaya experienced rapid development is expected to occur between ll sambai century-12th century. When it Sriwijaya, which has 13 colonies, covering all areas of western Indonesia and the entire peninsula to the south of the Malays until the Bandon Bay.
The writings that contain Buddhist teachings found in Pasir Panjang, the northern tip of Pulau Karimun (Riau Islands), provide clues that the area is an outpost of Srivijaya to oversee the cruise lines at the mouth of the Strait of Melaka. Above the inscription was discovered three giant palm of your left foot. Palm of his right leg in the same sizes found somewhere in Singapore.

The soles of the feet which depicts the Buddha to conquer the world are standing facing north, with the left foot rests in Pasir Panjang and right foot on the island of Singapore. So the ships through the Straits of Melaka will be under kangkangannya. This is the amount of matted Sriwijaya power at that time centered on Muaratakus.
In the peak of its power Sriwijaya is an international trade center and the central teaching of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Such a situation lasted until the coming of the Kingdom of Siam attacks in 1292, the kingdom of Melayu-Jambi Kingdom Singosari who has mastered since 1275. Since the heyday of Sriwijaya began to fade.
After Srivijaya fell due to a series of invasion, the members of the descendants of the dynasty Sailendra trying to revive the greatness of the throne of their ancestors by establishing new kingdoms. One of them is the Sapurba, who left Palembang to seek help from some former small kingdoms of Sriwijaya mandala.
According to the History of Malays, Sang Sapurba entourage departed from Palembang in the late 13th century Musi River downstream and landed in the Kingdom Tanjungpura. There was a son sa ¬ de ¬ mated with daughters of local rulers and later enthroned as king. After that the Sapurba go to Bintan, where he also wed a son to the daughter of another king of Bintan. The goal of his sons to marry the daughter of the local kings is to revive the imperial ancestors.
